If you also take the top cover off the console, in addition to taking off the cover with the key switch, you should be able to view the whole pto linkage. There is a rod with a bent end that hooks into the pto handle. It then goes into the long adjusting nut, which connects to a rod which goes through the floor into the clutch housing. If memory serves me, the clutch is ajusted as follows.

Position the PTO lever so the detent is holding it . This is neutral, just ahead of the brake position.

Remove the cotter pin holding the rod to the handle.

Ajust the rod in or out of the adjusting nut until there is 3/8" vertical free play to line up the rod with its hole in the lever. You lift the rod by hand until it feels resistance. The 3/8" will be above the hole.

reinstall the rod in the handle and reinstall the cotter pin.

If I have this wrong, someone will tell me.
