The old tractors like a W-6 or W-9 had no power steering I remember my Father in the spring doing discing or cultivating stopping when he arrived at the field and proceed to remove the lock pins that held the drawbar fixed. He explained to me that by so doing the tractor would pull straighter and steering especially turning was much easier. Of course I knew more than He. When it was my turn to disc I did not put the drawbar into the swinging mode(did not want to get of the seat) until the SECOND round in the field..... However with the late bigger tractors, the swinging drawbar is a feature that is rarely used.
