Mark, Old JDBob is right on the money there. They were used when there was no battery available like on hand start machinery. The snap you hear is when the impulse spring suddenly turns the magneto over causing a magnet to pass near a coil of wire which induces a voltage across its ends and fires the coil and plugs. They changed over basically because a battery supplied coil ignition system generally produces more spark energy. The Wicos need new points and condensors occassionally and they will have a coil go bad now and then. John T in Indiana
