I don't think there is anything different between an F-250 and F-350 aside from heavier suspension in the F-350. I have the "older" diesel (from 2001, 7.2 liters I think vs. 6.0 currently) and I think it is great. As far as for off-road use, it you are wanting to go like a bat our of hell off road, you would probably be better off with a gas engine which reaches peak HP at higher RPMs, and is lighter in weight. If you want to go along at a nice pace, the diesel may be just the thing. I have the 6-sp standard transmission ... Put it in low gear (or even low-low 4wd) and it crawls along without even haveing your foot on the accelerator. Lots of weight up front for traction on that end too.
