Sometimes the needle valve that allows gas to run into the float chamber sticks in the up (closed) position. This can cause sporatic missing or outright engine stoppage if it sticks tight. I can usually determine if that's the problem by tapping on the side of the carb. That's usually enough to unseat the needle valve and get it going again. Fixing it? I honestly think it just needs to be run more. But, cleaning and replacing the needle valve has helped. It usually happens at the worst possible time.
