Kevin: Here is what I encountered with a starter turning the wrong way. I went to an Auto Electric Rebuilder with the non working starter from my 1066 Farmall. He advised if I waited he could fix in about 20 min. About the same time a friend I hadn't seen in awhile came in, we got into conversation while the rebuilder did his thing. I left with my rebuilt starter about 30 min later. Went home and installed it. Turned the engine, but not well though. I watched while someone else pushed the starter button. It was trying to turn the 1066 engine backwards. Back to the rebuilder I go. He knew I also had a 466 in a truck, and had thought I had the truck starter. They are the same starter. The difference 1066 starter lies behind flywheel and truck starter lies ahead of flywheel along side engine. They turn opposite directions. The armature is different. He had installed the wrong armature, he also had to change it. The two applications use a completely different armature. I don't know if this is always the case but it is with the starter I mentioned.
