A lot of ranchers do this and it helps to contain or at least slow the spread of the occassional fire set by a cigarette being thrown out the window etc. However, we have been experiencing high winds as well. For instance, the Sunday after Thanksgiving we had a bad fire pass West of Wichita Falls (northbound) that was started by downed power lines with winds in excess of 60 mph. Something like 18000 acres burned. Last Sunday we had a bad fire east of here that went through the small town of Ringgold, west of Nocona, and burned a lot of homes. Winds that day were about 40+ out of the west. With winds that high, that fire can jump 100 or more feet! Crosses major highways and everything...we are all on pins and needles around here...with really no rain in the foresable forecast! Tim
