B&D, I think you missed a point there. Glow plugs HAD to be fitted to achieve combustion temps in a cold engine BECAUSE they used a precombustion chamber. Shifting near all the combustion air into the energy cell allowed too much adiabatic heat energy to be lost to the surroundings as it was shifted through the entry/exit duct. Reason for the energy cell was the precise engineering (far in excess of casting ability) to obtain the high velocity swirl inside the combustion chamber to allow complete combustion without producing particulates. You are right about noise, but for relatively high speed engines, because of the inherent heat loss at all temperatures (a larger surface area of metal and fairly intimate contact with the gas stream), the indirect injected engine will always be less efficient than a similar engine fitted for direct injection.
