This is how I do it on case stuff. Get a med grit emery flap wheel that goes on a 1/4" drill.
Before inserting rod through gland, dress (lightly bevel and debur) the end of the rod with the flap wheel. Then before stuffing the piston in the tube, run the flap wheel around in the end of the tube to polish and remove any burrs. If it's all dirty, and anyways, spray with wd40 or light solvent while burnishing, or deburring. Then there has still been time where it took nearly a ram home with a tractor to get the thing started going back together.
