curious exhaust ?

I was just wondering, does putting a larger exhaust on a truck really do as much good as the manufactures say? My diesel has 3 1/2" factory exhaust, was thinking of bumping it up to a 4" mandrel bent exhaust. I know getting the air out is only half the program, but I won"t put an air intake on for a while. I"m not looking to make tons of power or be the loudest truck in town.
