My neighbor has a 3-53 Detroit in his 60-something International pickup. I don't think it has much pulling power, but sounds kind or neat coming down the road. Sounds like it's doing 60 when it only doing 20. Back in the mid-70s, before there were any full-size diesel pickups, there were some pretty neat kits around for conversions. One was for a six-cylinder Nissan turbo-diesel with all parts needed to bolt into a Chevy. I had an IH Scout with a factory-installed diesel that was also Nissan, but four cylinder. Then Dodge made one for one year in the full size truck - I think it was a six-cylinder Misubishi around 1978. Now, with all the factory made diesel pickups, I don't see much innovation or engine swapping anymore. I suspect that, for what you want to do, weight will be a factor. Most HD diesel engines with enough power for what you want will probably be pretty heavy.
