If the tractor is a diesel it wont start good by pop starting. BTDT. Years ago I tried to start my almost new tractor this way in cold weather and wound up heating cans of new oil and changing the oil at the bottom of the hill. Started fine then. (this was in cold weather) Turned out the factory battery was defective. Replaced battery, no more serious trouble starting. Another trick for cold weather starting: get an electric heat gun, use it to warm up air intake manifold, then have someone blow the hot air into the intake manifold while you crank the tractor. Don't use a propane torch for heating for obvious reasons. KEH
