I tend to think the way you do. I like reduced complexity on something like a farm tractor and I would prefer a normally aspirated engine to one that has a turbo just because there is less to go wrong. However, the choice of engines in certain horspower classes are made by the manufacturer and you may not get to make the choice. The designers and builders of modern equipment obviously think that both the reliability and cost per unit horspower warrant tubo'd engines and I think we will be seeing more of that in the future. As more and more turbo's come into use, the unit price drops and they are cheaper to use. As the engine manufacturer's get more and more experience with turbo's engines, they understand the design requirements for longevity and reliability and how to make the engines better and the life and reliabiility improve. I'm less concerned about a turbo'd engine today than I was say 10 years ago. Just my opinion. A retired aircraft propulsion engineer.
