OT(kinda)...Need engine history help

In course of selling off old-car etc paper collection, got hooked on US independent engine mfr"s (Buda,Cont,H-S,Herc,Wauk etc)...can"t find anything really comprhensive on whick mk/mod engine went into which mk/mod/yr trk,trctr,bus,const,ind"l, agri/farm eqpmt etc units...pts cat"lgs, rep man"s seem incomplete/contradictory...does anything like that exist?? any suggestions what to look/adv for??
any comments (except as to stupidity) appreciated..
