Some of it was due to where and how the manufacturer had decided to put the brake and clutch functions. Allis for many years had band brakes acting on their pinion shafts which lent themselves to hand levers. Ford and others had internal expanding shoes inside of brake drums, which made pedals easier. Some of the Deere people can maybe explain their hand clutches and why they stayed with that so long. There are stupid mistakes and stupid ideas, but there never has been a stupid question.
