You set the rim (or a chunk of a large log) next to the post and hook the chain as low on the post as you can. It redirects most of the pulling motion from horizontal to vertical. Since most of us, well, at least me, tend to make a cone-shaped post hole, there is not much resistance pulling a post straight up. Cows don't know that, though, so don't go telling 'em.
