Many of the early tractor users had been driving horses and were used to hand brakes. Also, in those days young children would drive the tractor and it was much easier to use a hand clutch than a foot clutch, especially with short legs. Although I have learned how to use a foot clutch, I much prefer hand levers on a skid loader, than to have to use my feet. I don't break as many manure spreader boards with the hand controls. Never have gotten used to the foot pedals.
