I'm presuming that this is a four stroke diesel engine. If that's the case, it had to be more that just locating a pin through a hole in the crankshaft pulley to get the timing since the cylinder goes through a compression stroke every other revolution of the crank shaft. You must have to also observe the valves on #1 cylinder to make sure they were closed to assure your self they were on the compression stroke. If there is a diesel shop near you, go talk to them about your problem and they might be able to gibve you some good advice. Otherwise you'll have to know the valve timing relative to the injector opening and put a degree wheel on the crankshaft pulley, and find TDC on #1 to determine where to start. Good Luck.
