I assume you"re using Windows XP? Disk Defragmenter needs at least 15% free space on the disk. You can run it with less, but for best results you need 15%. To get more free space, try burning files to CD, removing programs you no longer use (make sure you have the installation media so you can reinstall them later if needed). Depending on how your computer is configured, you might be able to keep your existing hard drive and add another one as a "slave" to the original. Most computers have extra slots and plugs on the ribbon cable to support this.
