TD9 Not Starting...

I own a Intl Harvester TD9, it used to work good, but now, I have a terrible time getting it started, I appear to have sparks (very light) due to the magneto I guess, it almost appears as if there is no sparks or the gas is not getting to the plugs, I'm wondering if I have an ignition problem "re.. points or distrutor cap" even though, everything looks good there, gas does get to the carburator and all appears to be fine, but I can't get it started, the timing was checked and is fine, it did "start" once before (I don't quite know what I would of done) after two cranks it started, but I switched to diesel too fast and lost it, when I tried to restart on gas, it was to no avail, and I can't get it to start at all... how can I bypass the magneto? would this be my problem? Appreciate any idea you might have....
