There may be a poor connection between the key or start switch and the starter solenoid, so full battery voltage is not getting to the solenoid. It could even be a poor connection involved in the "neutral safety" system (if it has one). Also, I am not real familiar with the 580. Some tractors have a small starter solenoid, much like a Ford "fender-mount" starter solenoid ahead of the big starter solenoid. The start switch activates the little solenoid, which, in turn. switches battery voltage to the big solenoid on the starter. If your unit is set up like that, there may be a problem with that solenoid, or it's associated circuitry. You could be hearing the little solenoid "click" without power getting to the big solenoid. I have seen this more than once on tractors so equipped.
