In the first place you said he was "going to school" so I assume he is learning on your grills also. Learning is not worth any where near what an experienced body/paint tech should get paid. You havn't a clue what they will turn out like,and the hours that he takes to do them may be three times what an expert would take.In my opinion,wait to see the finished grills and decide for yourself what it was worth to you according to how well they came out. If he's getting an education on your dollar then you call the shots in my opinion . Back in 1970 when I first started out, I would do the work for materials only,and if they were happy enough with the job to give me more then that was their call.These schools are fine but they teach the basics,what you are letting him do is "real world" and he aught to be happy someone is giving him the oportunity.I'm sure you can work it out between you but just remember the above. Also remember that unless he has a repair shop registration with the state he cannot legally charge you anything. A person needs to be carefull starting out doing work for others and trying to get paid. LOL.
