Chevy Cavalier trans. dip stick?????

My grandson come over to have me help him with his new ,to him, 97 Cavalier. Show him how to change oil and so forth.The owners manual shows a dip stick with a loop for your finger to pull it out with. His just has a threaded plastic plug on the left side marked "trans fill". My friends girl has one the same way. No stick on the plug cause the hole is shallow in the fill area . Any body run into this problem This is tractor related, right?
