The problem I have with leaving old oil over the winter is that the acids that have developed in the oil during use are sitting in the engine. Condensation in the oil will burn off when the engine is running the oil gets above the boiling point of water pretty quickly so as long as you run the machine for more than a few minutes you'll be okay. Of course to contradict myself today's oils are pretty darned good so its quite likely that the oil will be able to neutralize the acid built up over a limited amount of running during the summer and it'll be fine during the winter... So basically its probably fine either way.
