I am not fimilar with Deutz tractors, but my MF 165 dsl has the same 3 positions for the PTO. The back position is to engage the PTO, Middle is Off and forward is ground speed (which means the PTO shaft turns inrelation to the rear wheels turning). To check and see engage forward and pull off check the PTO turning in relation to your speed. Hope this helps.
