What makes your mechanic think the engine is not original? One way you might be able to tell the relative age of the engine is from the casting code on the right side of the block. If it starts with the letters EAE it is likely an original engine. Later blocks had different codes. I'm not expert on all the Ford engine block casting codes, but there are guys on the Ford discussion board that are. As for color, it was common in the sixties for a dealer to repaint trade ins to match the current color scheme. The thinking was it would make them "look newer" and therefor sell better. Apparently someone decided to return the tractor to the original colors, but didn't do a very good job of it.
