Fire is one thing you won't understand unless you have had experience with it. Obviously he thought he could control it and never meant for it to get away from him, but anybody who knows anything about fire knows the only day to do a controlled burn is on calm days, even slight gusts of wind can really make a fire flare up and push it with incredible speed across a field. Most folks have no clue how to put out a grass fire either, and try just swatting at it, which is useless and doesn't work, the trick is to smother it, take a shovel, broom, or garden rake, and drag it over the fire.
