Dave, That lil side No 1 terminal is the alternators Excite terminal and what I do is run a wire from the ignition switches IGN output (same place that feeds voltage to the coil when ignition switched ON) terminal with a series 10 ohm 5 watt current limiting resistor to the alternators No 1 terminal to serve as the excitation voltage. In the rare event the tractor continued to run despite the ignition being turned off (alternator backfeeding ignition coil), then I add a 5 amp 50PIV diode wired with its - cathode to the alternator.
