Farmall M PTO Disengages

I have a 1943 Farmall M in regular use. The PTO now on occasion will disengage on it's own. Any idea what the problem is? It looks like you can pull the PTO assembly out from the rear of the tractor. Can you re-stab it without pulling the top transmission cover?
