Last place I heard the word chert was in a cave, when the guide said "Be careful not to step there, it's a chert ledge". I said "What's a chert ledge?" Guide said, "It's where the floor of the cave is only about 3 inches of chert, and beneath it is another chamber about 40 feet deep". I said "What's chert?" Guide said "it's that brittle black flint you're standing on, now get over here!"
