My Webster's New World Dictionary provides the following definition for chert "A very fine-graned, tough rock, composed mainly pof silica and occuring commonly in limestone beds." I live in Arkansas and around here it is pronounced "chat." It is more expensive than river gravel. This is because it is a quarried and processed product. The most common use is for drives, walkways, and parking lots. The practice here is to put down a bed of gravel and follow it with chat. Makes a nice, white drive. It does, however, require periodic reapplication as heavy traffic breaks it down somewhat.
