since i brought up this topic heres what chert is in my area, hickman county tn. its a reddish looking course dirt, noy clay but maybe a notch below it. it packs really well with traffic. after it has been wet a few times and run over by the traffic it becomes hard as a rock.for years in this area it was the material of choice for road building and even today the county still uses it a great deal for road bases and non blacktop roads. thats why they will bring loads of it for driveways. if it is packed right it will last for years. many a farmer here has made extra money over the years selling chert banks to the county. chert can be dug out of the hill using loaders, graders, dozers etc., no blasting necessary. hope this helps
