Brake magnets are not polarized. Either wire can be positive (connected to the brake controller). Be aware that some trailers, particularly smaller ones, depend on an electrical connection through the coupler ball for a ground path for the lights. This is a poor approach for brakes; intermittant lights are an annoyance, intermittant brakes are dangerous. Use a wired return back to the tow vehicle electrical connector ground pin. Don"t depend on a connection to the trailer frame. It"s fine to also connect the trailer frame to the connector ground pin to provide an additional return path for the lights. Finally, make sure the tow vehicle side is well grounded to the vehicle chassis, or as suggested, run a return wire all the way back to the battery negative connection. Keith

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion.
