Hi, I have a small patch of Wheat in Indiana that we will combine in early July. I wondered about planting some pumpkins by hand into the wheat as it was growing. I need to know if you think this will work: In early May when the wheat is 10 inches tall, I would spot spray with roundup - circles about 18 inches in diameter to kill the wheat. Then dig up with showel and plant pumpkins seeds every 7-8 feet apart in rows 10 feet apart. Planting in early -mid June. Then in early July just drive the combine over the hills of pumpkins....I dont think the plants will have spread out too far before combining so it should pass right over. I will use the wheat straw as a mulch to keep weeds down and spot spray as necessary. What do you think about this double/intercrop method? I need to plant pumpkins, but dont have the bare ground to do it. Also, what is the going rate for wholesale pumpkins per lb?
