Hey Allen. I have a 2002 Polaris 400. The linkage rod from the shifter handle to the tranny will get out of adjustment and cause the problem that you have described. It adjusts like a screendoor adjuster with a simple wrench. Look on the right side of the machine and you should see the rod. I do not remember taking any plastic off to get to it. The machine is almost impossible to get into gear when we have the choke set up so that it will idle high. Make sure your RPM's are at idle speed with the choke off before you try to get it into gear. Hope this helps. Do you have a service manual?!?
