That's not a particularly good analogy. Surgery is, of itself, inherently risky. You won't suffer a surgical mistake if you don't go under the knife. The argument that the anti-gunners make is that the mere presence of a gun in your home increases the risk of death or injury of everyone in the home, even if the gun isn't intentionally used. A much better analogy is the swimming pool. Drowning in a home swimming pool is a leading cause of death among young children. The presence of a swimming pool in your yard definitely increases the risk that a family member will drown, even if the pool is never used.. But no one is proposing that we ban swimming pools.
