Had a customer try to fix some motor problems with his hired man a few weeks ago, they went and got a cheep meter and had it set to the resistance scale and threw it across the lugs on a pretty good sized motor starter 480 volt, and were telling me how shocked they were when the meter blew up and the big fire ball that came out of the cabinet, they got real lucky and didn"t get burned.
you are right, on the voltages in a house you should just blow the fuse in the meter..
