There are a lot of variables when it comes to prices that have little to do with condition. I've passed up several ED40s the past few years with prices ranging from $500 to $1000. The last one I owned developed a rod knock. I never pulled it apart to find out for sure since I couldn't find any parts at the time. At least, as it was, it was a running tractor. I sold it for $800. Shortly after, I bought an IH B-275 - another British powered tractor. Paid $500 and it had water in the engine oil. But, parts were, and still are easy to get - even on this website. The B-275 is very close in size, power, handling, and design to the AC ED40 except it does not have a hand-clutch for the PTO - it uses a two stage foot clutch instead. The B-275 uses a British/Indian 144 cubic inch engine whereas the AC ED-40 uses a Standard - Ricardo 138 cubic inch engine (it was also used in British taxi cabs). Massey Ferguson had a tractor that had the same engine as the AC ED-40. There is one close to me right now, for sale - at an auction house. It's a 1959 or 1960 Massey Ferguson TO-35 with the Standard 23C diesel motor. I tried to buy it last week - offering the guy $800, but he did not take me up on my offer.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
