some maintenance free batteries do have removeable caps to check the water level and add as necessary. i have one in my truck. they still need to have terminals cleaned as needed also and i check the charging rate occasionaly to make sure the system is ok. however, i do replace my batteries every 3-4 years wheather they are good, marginal or bad. that way i don"t have any worries about getting stranded with a bad battery. i do agree however that maint. free batteries are another gimmick for the consumer to spend money on a false sense of security. and we all know what battery warranties are like.
