farmall m timing question

i have a 42 m recently overhauled. has a delco distributor. if you time the engine on the factory marks, the engine labors hard and over heats. i timed the motor by ear, the timing mark shows up at just about the 12 oclock position. this is about 2 inches from the pointer. whats going on here? all the front gears are lined up correctly. thnx glenn
