With a portable tank smaller than your tractor tank you really aren't going to do any refilling but maybe get in enough for a short run. It takes pressure of a larger volume tank to refill your tractor tank to the 70-80%. You would still only get a partial refill. JD LP tractors and some others had a tee fitting with a cap on it you could remove to direct attach a portable tank to the line going to regulator for purposes of just getting tractor the larger tank to refill. You just tied on a small tank like a BBQ tank to tractor while doing that. We never did that because we always had LP tanks on trailers to refill in the fields. It is illegal now to pull those on public roadways.
