O/T '93 Escort probs

Nephew has this one, 1.9L engine, fuel injected, automatic trany. Been sitting for a couple months, wouldn't start. For whatever reason it started today but would barely idle. Plugs were checked and gapped, getting fuel past the filter. It will start after much cranking and with some 'feathering' of the accelerator, will -slowly- speed above idle(as if each cylinder was coming on line one at a time). When at or above ~ 2500 rpms it runs like a scalded xxx ape(in park). When I would let off the gas it won't idle or will attempt to with much 'shudder'. EACH plug is getting fire(has the distibutor-less ignition). NO codes or "Check Engine" light. Does it need a well-placed .44? I'm leaning towards ignition module or egr? ANY and ALL help is appreciated!!
