I work in a powerhouse full time (farming is a hobby - helping my Dad). Today I was working on an air compressor that had some vibration problems. We were trouble-shooting and had it narrowed down to one of the stages. To put things in perspective, the compressor has three seperate stages and puts out about 10,000cfm at 350psi. It's driven by a 4,000HP electric motor. I put my hand on the bearing housing to see if the vibration was real - and I could tell something was wrong. I stepped off the platform and was walking back to the controller when it groaned, the bearing housings on the stage exploded, and then caught the lube oil feeding the bearings on fire (the metal parts in the compressor get very hot and fast). That particular stage spins about 8400rpm. The lube oil pump fed the fire until IT finally shut down and the fire brigade put it out. Sorry for the lengthy dissertation. I learned my lesson..
