OT-F150 steering

My new used 1990 F150 has a loose steering gear box and after
asking the mechanics to fix the wander problem, they put in
$400+ of ball joints and it is worse! I have never, on the many
used cars and pickups I have owned over the last 50 years, ever
had to adjust or replace the steering "sector". Any way of
tightening it? I wish I had my 88 Siverado with 270,000 on it
back, now.
