I have seen crows in melons around here as long as I can remember. Some years are worse than others. We used to string the patch. Put tobacco sticks in the ground around and through the patch and run string, usually tobacco twine, randomly to connect the sticks. We would do this after we finish cultivating. Now I still use the sticks and I use the plastic orange or yellow reflective tape and zig zag across the field. Crows have not been a problem even though they are still around. I have not found a way to keep the deer out however. I always heard that the crows are afraid they will get caught in the tape or string. Hope this helps
