I'm not Allan but know some about those older JD rakes. Don't guess you have pics of it?? That sure would help. Does it look like one of these 850 series, 851 or 858 with cast star shaped wheel and gear box drive ? If the reel bar wheel is round it could be a 890 series, 894 or 896 too with chain drive set up. Or is one of those old big wheel or steel wheel rascals? I got pics of the 858 on Implement photos too but it's just a later version of 851. Hope yours is in better shape than that one Allan got rid of. If the gear box is shot get ready to trade, find used parts or spend money on converting with a hydraulic motor as many new parts aren't available much for the gear boxes anymore.
