As I recall there was an engine Cummins made for awhile that is not real good. I have a 96 that has been great. He used to work for Cummins and still has a shop where he tunes 5.9 engines. He knows his stuff. He was a good friend to my dad before his death a few years ago. I have put an ATS torque converter in mine. Makes that sucker work. She gets around 24 empty and about 15 pulling a 25 foot float.
