This property is now owned by the Connecticut Audobon Society, part of a 1200+/- acres contigous owned between them and a local land trust in Pomfret. Obviously, the farm was quite the place in 1895 when this barn was built. I believe they went out of dairying with the Whole Herd Farce...er, buy out...of the late 1980s.
The Audobon lands are primarily managed for bird habitat. Most of it is kept open by mowing once per year in the early winter (ground frozen, before snow if they time it right). They'll also use prescribed fires in the spring occassionally. The barn had a fairly large (120 head?) pole barn style addition to the rear (left of the existing barn) built around 1970 or so. Like most of those structures around here no longer actively used, after 30 years it's roof failed and it was torn down.
