I have a Craftsman with the "automatic transmission" which as you suspected is a self-contained hydrostatic, which I purchased about 4 years ago. The only problem I have had with it is that the speed is inconsistent, so that as it warms up it slows down, then as it is used some more, it returns to its initial startup speed. This happens slowly, and at first I thought it was my imagination, so I timed it, and sure enough.... Also, it overruns going downhill to some extent, so to keep the speed steady, you have to play with the speed lever. In all, though, I like it better than the regular gearbox transmission. Much more convenient, as I have lots of nooks and crannies in my yard which require lots of speed changes and backing up.
