My chocolate lab is a heck of a coon dog. What's nice about him is that he won't go a'chasin unless I give the word. He's 98 lbs of muscle.
Great family pet too, gentle and well behaved. I think just about any medium to large breed dog properly trained and socialized will get er done.
Just be sure to keep up on the rabies shots and give em a good once over when they bring home a coon. My beagle got a nasty abcess once from tangling with a dirty rotten racoon.
